Are you looking for the best work at home career that is actually worth your time and effort? One that is profitable, legitimate and promising?
Maybe you are a stay at home mom or dad looking for a flexible schedule that allows you to put your family first. Or, maybe you are looking to travel the world while you make money from your laptop. Maybe you are tired of working for someone else and are ready to be your own boss. Maybe you just want some extra cash so you can pay for your child’s gymnastics fees but you don’t want a job that will take over your life.
But how do you find the best work at home career for you?
Sifting through all the work at home scams and looking for something legitimate can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I understand…as a mother of three little kids, I have spent countless hours looking for real work at home career ideas and have experienced firsthand how frustrating it can be. It can be so hard to find something legitimate and something that gives me the freedom I am looking for.
Part of my focus for Course Crave is to provide a place for others to discover ideas and training to find the best work at home careers and side hustle opportunities, allowing you to find the perfect match.
As a graduate of a Bachelor’s degree program myself, I have become disenchanted over the years with how little that degree has offered me. This, combined with being out of the workforce for some time while having and raising young kids has put me in a difficult place work wise. (Although, I don’t regret staying home with my kids for a second!)
If you find yourself in similar shoes, I highly doubt that you want to go back to do MORE education at college or university.
There is good news!
The wave of elearning has opened up so many doors to receive the training you need to start the best work at home career for you…and one where you can be your own boss and wake up each day with a sense of purpose in your work life.
Also, one where you are not doing surveys for pennies or trying to convince your friends to join your product parties.
In this post, I highlight some of the best work at home career ideas that you may not have thought of.
These ideas can all be done part time with a flexible schedule (perfect for putting your family first or travelling the world) and have the potential to become full time if you desire to move in that direction. With many of them the income potential is over $10,000 per month!
I will also highlight how you can learn more about these avenues and how to acquire the ideal training. Some of the specialized training is as low as $150! As an added bonus, most of these ideas can be started on your own with little startup costs.
Are you eager to take your work from home pursuits seriously and learn the ropes from trained experts in their industries? Keep reading to learn how you can find the best work at home career…and get started today!

#2 BECOME A FREELANCE WRITER
Do you enjoy writing?
If so, you are in a great position. One of the work from home jobs that I see posted most often on websites and blogs is that of a content writer. There are so many different opportunities out there for freelance writers…blogs, documents, articles, content marketing…the list goes on and on.
HOW MUCH YOU CAN MAKE AS A FREELANCE WRITER
This video shows how a stay at home mom Sally earns $1000 per month working less than 10 hours per week as a freelance writer.
Gina Horkey of Horkey HandBook has mentioned that she has regularly made $3000 per month writing just 10 hours a week. Many freelance writers have the opportunity to make much more than that just by increasing their hours.

#3 BECOME A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT
This list would not be a thorough list if I did not include the amazing work at home career opportunity of becoming a virtual assistant (VA). Virtual assistant work involves working online remotely for another business.
As Abbey Ashley describes in the video below:
“A virtual assistant is any type of remote assistant who provides administrative, creative or technical support services for online or brick and mortar business owners.”
The world of virtual assistant work is now wide open. There are a plethora of opportunities becoming available as more and more people are starting online businesses and are looking for support.
Firsthand, I have a taste of all the tasks it actually takes to create a thriving business. The number and variety of tasks are a lot more than I ever thought there would be. Having a skilled virtual assistant take care of many of those tasks can be a dream come true for any business owner.
As a virtual assistant, you get to choose the type of work you would like to do. Many virtual assistants start off as a general virtual assistant, taking care of many different tasks needed.
After getting their feet wet in this way, many then go on to specialize in an area that they have developed expertise in. Some examples of specialities include social media management, email management, project management, real estate and Pinterest management (see below).
A virtual assistant business is a wonderful side hustle opportunity that can remain a side business for you while you are working another job. It is also one of the best work at home career opportunities to do part time or turn into a full time job.
I know of many virtual assistants who started with it being a side business but then loved it so much they were able to develop it into a full time business and quit their 9 to 5.
HOW MUCH YOU CAN MAKE AS A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT
In the video below by virtual assistant training expert Abbey Ashley you will hear how one mom has made $5000 per month as a new virtual assistant working from home while raising 5 kids! And others who are making $10,000 per month.
Abbey suggests that a good starting rate is $30 per hour for a general VA rate and from there raising your rates as you become more experienced and are able to specialize.
She also mentions that a VA starting out by working 35 hours per week can make up to $63,700 per year. And as you add high end services your earnings will only go up! That sure does sound like an appealing work from home career option that does not require going back to school.

#4 BECOME A TRANSCRIPTIONIST
One of my favorite things to do is transcribe audio to text. I love learning about new things and I actually really love to type…transcription allows for both.
There have been many myths floating around the internet about how the transcription field is dying. This is far from the truth! It may be true that the future of medical transcription is dwindling due to certain automations. However, there is much more available to transcriptionists besides medical transcription.
Janet Shaughnessy of TranscribeAnywhere has kindly taken the time to dispel common transcription myths for us at Course Crave’s post The Truth About Transcription: 15 Myths Dispelled by Expert Janet Shaughnessy.
As the online world is growing, so is the need for general transcriptionists. There are many opportunities that exist and more and more becoming available, including transcribing for podcasts, videos, interviews and more.
I had the privilege of interviewing Krista about how she became a general transcriptionist and about her experience working as a transcriptionist in this post on How to Become a Transcriptionist.
There is also an opportunity to be a specialized transcriptionist by becoming a legal transcriptionist. A legal transcriptionist transcribes proceedings.
HOW MUCH YOU CAN EARN AS A TRANSCRIPTIONIST
Janet Shaughnessy of TranscribeAnywhere states: “The average median annual income for a general transcriptionist is currently $45,000. Legal transcriptionists can earn around $60,000. Of course, if you start your own business and hire subcontractors while working as a project manager yourself, your income can grow well beyond these figures.”

#5 BECOME A PINTEREST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT
This career is along the lines of being a virtual assistant. However, it focuses specifically on offering expert Pinterest services to businesses.
Many businesses are looking to outsource their Pinterest activities as they would love to have a Pinterest expert take this off their plate. This involves managing clients’ accounts using Pinterest strategies. Obviously, in order to offer expertise in Pinterest you must learn the ins and outs of Pinterest yourself.
In this video, Elizabeth Stapleton describes her income journey as a Pinterest virtual assistant.
I have two amazing interviews to share with you about becoming and being a Pinterest VA.

HOW MUCH YOU CAN MAKE AS A PINTEREST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT
As a Pinterest VA you can earn an extra $400 per month with just two hours of work per week. Many exceed that with more hours of work per week and can make up to and exceeding $10,000 per month if working full time. #6 BECOME A BOOKKEEPER
If you like working with numbers, becoming a bookkeeper could be a great option for you. I have done this in the past as an employment position and loved it.
Bookkeepers serve to help businesses with their financial accounts. I have heard that the bookkeeping field is in high demand as more and more businesses are opening up online. Not all business owners will have the time or skillset to do their own books.
Bookkeeping can be done entirely virtually and on your own time. It can be very part time with one or two clients per month or full time with many.
In this video, expert bookkeeping trainer Ben Robinson explains the steps to take to become a bookkeeper that provides value.
HOW MUCH YOU CAN EARN AS A BOOKKEEPER
According to Ben Robinson of Bookkeeper Launch you can earn up to $60 per hour as a bookkeeper.

#7 BECOME A PODCAST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT OR MANAGER
Podcasts are becoming increasingly possible. I just heard Jessica Stansberry state that there are over 800,000 podcasts (as of Jan 2020)! And nearly everyday in Facebook groups I come across someone stating that they are starting their own podcast.
There is a lot that goes into having a successful podcast. A podcast manager or virtual assistant helps with the details and can serve in various capacities such as launching, editing, managing, and growing podcasts for small businesses.
HOW MUCH YOU CAN EARN AS A PODCAST VA
As a specialized VA you can earn at least $40 per hour and potentially much more than this. This video by Abbey Ashley describes the rates that can be charged as a specialized VA.

#8 BECOME A SCOPIST
Have you ever heard of scoping? Until recently, I was not aware that this work from home career even existed, and most people I talk to haven’t heard of it either.
Scoping is the process of editing transcripts of official court proceedings.
It is great for those who are detail oriented and have excellent punctuation, word use and vocabulary skills.
In order to become an expert scopist, it is essential to acquire adequate training to gain the skills necessary. Linda Evenson, who has been scopist for over 40 years, offers training on how to become a scopist (see below).
HOW MUCH YOU CAN MAKE AS A SCOPIST
According to Linda Evenson of Internet Scoping School a “realistic figure for a scopist with a fairly steady inflow of work is probably in the $30,000 to $35,000 range and increasing — but we’ve seen quite a few scopists earn even more than that”.

#9 BLOGGING OR NICHE WEBSITES
Running a website or blog on a specific topic can be a very lucrative work opportunity for those willing to put in the time and effort to develop a site and who have the patience to see it grow. There are numerous ways to monetize a blog or niche site.
If you are passionate about a niche, love to write, and do not want to be accountable to completing tasks for others, this could be perfect for you.
One of my favorite YouTube channels is by Jim and Ricky of the Income School. Niche websites are their speciality. They offer tons of valuable content on succeeding at SEO and on gaining traffic to a website. They also teach about how they have been successful with niche websites. Accomplishing what they have accomplished is no easy task. However, following expert advice could make all the difference in the world. I have posted a video with them in the section below.
HOW MUCH YOU CAN MAKE AS A BLOGGER OR WITH A NICHE SITE
The sky is really the limit when it comes to niche sites and blogs. I have collected a list of 64 blog income reports that show just how much bloggers can really make. There is one family who makes over $200,000 per month with their travel blog.
Keep in mind that compared to many of the other work from home career ideas that blogging and niche sites take awhile to get going. The income is less immediate and lots of patience is required but the pay off can be huge!
And here is a great interview that Income School did with a successful blogger who created a niche site that earned her $200,000 per year. See how she did it and how you can do it too!

#10 START A PRINTABLES BUSINESS
Do you love to design and create digital products such as planners, journals, etc? One great way to earn passive income from a side hustle is to create and see digital products such as printables.
HOW MUCH YOU CAN MAKE WITH A PRINTABLES BUSINESS
The creator of the course below Michelle has been able to earn over $60,000 of passive income with this, and that is only with 3 different printables. I have heard of others making even much more than that!

#11 BECOME AN AFFILIATE MARKETER
Affiliate marketing can actually be done in a number of ways. Affiliate marketing is essentially promoting someone else’s product or service and then receiving a commission for any sales you make.
This can be done through a blog or website, or other platforms such as Pinterest. You can become an affiliate for a number of different sites such Amazon, Etsy, online courses, and much more.
HOW MUCH CAN YOU MAKE AS AN AFFILIATE MARKETER
Affiliate marketing earnings can vary quite a bit. As with blogging, the sky is the limit depending on your platform, strategy and methods.

#12 START A BLOG FLIPPING BUSINESS
Blog flipping is something that I learned about through following Chelsea Clarke of HerPaperRoute. Not only is Chelsea a blogger but she also sets up blogs with the purpose of selling them.
If you like to start and gain momentum for projects and then move onto something new, blog flipping could be perfect for you. This ties into the blogging or niche site mentioned above as you would definitely need to learn how to create content and gain traffic to a blog before it would be worth a decent amount of money to sell.
In this video, Chelsea Clarke from HerPaperRoute shares how to make money flipping blogs.
HOW MUCH YOU CAN MAKE BLOG FLIPPING
Again, the income from this work at home career opportunity can vary quite a bit. The price of what you sell your websites for will determine your income. In the video above Chelsea describes how she made $50,000 flipping just one of her websites. She also mentions that she has seen websites that sell in the millions.
