In this interview, student Jessica Bruno shares her Horkey HandBook review of the 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success course.
As one of the more well known virtual assistant courses, the 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success course by Gina Horkey teaches everything you need to know to set up your own virtual assistant business, enabling you to reach success while helping real business owners solve real business problems.
As you will read below, Jessica decided to become a virtual assistant so that she could spend more time with her daughter. Jessica has just finished the course and is currently on the path to finding clients so that she can transition from her 9 to 5 to working from home as a virtual assistant.
Jessica’s choice to be trained as a virtual assistant definitely leads to a promising future. When I asked Gina Horkey what trends she saw coming up in the virtual assistant field she stated: “I think that the need for virtual assistants and remote workers is only going to increase. We live in a global economy these days and due to the internet and technology, businesses can contract with individuals all across the world (and vice versa). CAN YOU PLEASE START BY TELLING MY AUDIENCE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
I am a married mom to my beautiful 2 year old daughter and I do work a typical office job as a receptionist/admin assistant. I also own my own event planning business, part-time. I have had my side event planning business for 7 years and I love it! It’s great extra money. I have been an admin assistant/receptionist for 10 years at various companies. Life is crazy and hectic being a working mom and not being able to see my daughter as often as I would like and I’m hoping that changes soon.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SEEK TRAINING IN THIS FIELD?
My daughter is the one that motivates me. She is the one that makes me strive to make life better for not just her, but my husband and I too. I’m over the restricted 9-5 office job where I’m always rushing around after work, to pick up my daughter from daycare, come home and make dinner, give her a bath and then bed time. I barely get any time with her.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PARTICULAR COURSE?
I was researching online one day of what I could do to make an income and stay at home with my daughter. I found virtual assistant. I was doing some research on VAs and came across Horkey Handbook. I was looking more into it and deciding if this is what I could do and I know it could be. It’s exactly what I do now, but my OWN business, be my OWN boss and it’s work from home. Score! I read the reviews on the course and read about people who took the course and read about Gina. They sold me on going through with it.
WHAT WAS YOUR NUMBER ONE GOAL IN TAKING THIS COURSE? WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GET OUT OF IT?
My number one goal in taking this course is to work from home and be with my daughter. It’s been a goal of mine since the day I found out I was pregnant. What I was hoping to get out of it was to have the knowledge to get this business up off the ground. Gina’s course really does go in depth and goes over the tools you will need to be successful.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO COMPLETE THE COURSE?
It took me about 2 weeks to complete. I took my time and took my own notes and checklists that I need to do.
WHAT WAS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU LEARNED IN THE COURSE?
Don’t wait to start doing until you’re ready, just do it already. Throughout the course you’re reminded of this too. Just start pitching before you think you’re ready.
DID YOU MEET YOUR NUMBER ONE GOAL AS A RESULT OF TAKING THIS COURSE?
No, I haven’t yet, but I’m so determined to meet it. I have been just going and going and nothing will stop me from hitting my number one goal.
DID THIS COURSE MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS?
Yes, I believe it did. I have learned so much from this course like the different online tools that can be used for this type of job and learned how to navigate G Suite better.
WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT THE COURSE?
I like how it was very thorough and to the point. She gives examples of email pitches of various scenarios, checklists, script samples to make a “resume” video, and other various handouts.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WISH WAS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE COURSE?
No, I think it’s great the way it is. There is so much information and she explains everything so clearly.
WHAT DO YOU THINK COULD HELP STUDENTS MAKE THE MOST OUT OF THIS COURSE?
Follow everything that is said in the course. Make sure you are on the Facebook group page as well. It’s very helpful and they will post leads every once in a while too. Social media is always a great tool for connecting with people.
You need to read and reread the course. I have done so and I’m still going back and looking at it. There’s so much info that’s it’s hard to retain it all in one reading. Read it for a second, third, fourth time so you become an expert.
It’s a lot of hard work. It’s very hard to start a business out of thin air. I’m still working on getting that first client. It takes determination and to not give up to get this going. So I’m determined to make this work so I can be a better mom for my daughter.
WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?
I started my business about half way through the course. I got a domain, picked out a name and started on my website while figuring out my niches.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU FACE WITH YOUR CAREER?
I finally found my first client. I did a one time project for her. I am now done with the project and she’s talking about more stuff for me! I also have an interview with a potential client next week. I am still pitching like crazy and going through my wedding contacts to see if any of them need help with their daily tasks.
IS IT HARD/EASY TO FIND CLIENTS?
It’s a little hard. I did get my first client and have been told once you get the one client, the snowball will continue to grow. So far they are right since I have an interview next week!
DO YOU FEEL THAT THIS IS A GOOD WORK FROM HOME CAREER CHOICE FOR A STAY AT HOME MOM OR DAD?
Yes, I do. I believe anyone can make a career out of being a VA. You are your own boss and can make your own schedule. It’s a very flexible job, which is what parents need.
WHO WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO?
Any working moms or dads that want to find a career where they don’t have to leave the house. I can’t wait until the day comes where I can give my 2 weeks notice to my office job.
