INTERVIEW WITH KATE ERICKSON OF ENTREPRENEURS ON FIRE AND PODCASTERS’ PARADISE

KATE ERICKSON:
Kate is the engine at Entrepreneurs On Fire, an award winning podcast where John Lee Dumas interviews inspiring Entrepreneurs who are truly ON FIRE. She is also the host of the podcast Ditch Busy, co-author of The Podcast Journal: Idea to Launch in 50 Days and co-creator of Podcasters’ Paradise (training all about podcasting).

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK

I started out as an adult on a very traditional corporate path: college degree > steady job > promotions.

This didn’t sit well with me, but I didn’t know there was another way, so I sucked it up and kept living for the weekend.

After being in the same position with the same title and the same pay for nearly 4 years (this was at the age of 27), I finally stepped out and applied for a big promotion within the company. My boss told me I was going to get it FOR SURE.

…But then I didn’t.

I felt super defeated and like I had worked so hard for nothing. Feeling undervalued, unappreciated, and very frustrated – this is when I KNEW there had to be something else out there. So I promised myself I would quit my job in 6 months and figure out what this whole entrepreneurship thing was all about.

Two years passed and I had tried to start my own business, failed, and gone back to corporate.

Then, my boyfriend, who was also working in the corporate world, decided to start a daily podcast. He would call it Entrepreneurs On Fire.

Six months post launch he had gained powerful momentum, and while he was great at the visionary and creative role – and was doing amazing when it came to getting top entrepreneurs on the show and interviewing them to share incredible inspiration with his audience – he wasn’t an ops person. He knew it was a role he needed to fill in order to take the business to the next level and start creating products and services.

That’s where I came in – he asked if I would want to quit my job and join him on the team. While this didn’t happen right away (of course, I had a lot of fear around us working together and keeping up our relationship), I finally did quit my job and join him in the business.

Within 6 months, we launched a mastermind and an online course – both successfully. From that moment on we knew we had set up a super solid foundation: him the visionary, me the engine. Add in our virtual team members, and the sky was the limit!

WHAT ARE SOME FAILURES YOU HAVE HAD THAT YOU FEEL HAVE LED YOU TO SUCCESS?

Definitely failing at starting my own business. I felt like I was feeling around in the dark when I launched – I had no clue what I was doing, but as a result of just starting I learned SO MUCH. My biggest lesson from that failure: you have to niche down and know exactly who your ideal customer is. Trying to talk to everyone will result in you talking to NO ONE.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?

I would have niched down and gotten way clearer on who I wanted to serve with my first business. I struggled for 6 months trying to figure out why no one wanted to hire me, all the while I was literally telling people I would do anything for them related to their online presence.

HOW HAS STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND BEING YOUR OWN BOSS CHANGED YOUR LIFE?

I have freedom. I get to do what I want, when I want, with whom I want. I never knew that would be possible, but it is, and I’m living it.

Of course I work insanely hard to maintain it. It’s been a really beautiful journey where I’ve continued to learn new things every single day. Always remember to enjoy the journey.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORK DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

I always start my day with 4 main tasks or projects I want to accomplish (I use The Mastery Journal to help with this). Once those are finished, I jump in Asana and look at what other priorities I’ve assigned to myself for the day.

I do have a few ‘themed’ days throughout my week. For example, Thursday is my recording day, so anything having to do with recording my own podcast, or being a guest on others’ podcasts – it happens on Thursdays.

I’m super intentional with my time. Nothing happens unless it’s on my schedule, and that has made all the difference for my time management, productivity, and sanity 🙂

WHAT RESOURCES DO YOU HAVE AVAILABLE FOR OTHERS?

We have several free courses we offer to our audience to help them overcome the biggest pain points they’ve shared with us. For example, after hundreds asked us how to create a podcast, we created Free Podcast Course. This walks you through step by step how to create and launch your own podcast.

We have similar free courses available to help our audience come up with their big idea (yourbigidea.io), to create their first funnel (funnelonfire.com), and to help them set and accomplish their biggest goals (freegoalscourse.co)

(Also, see Kate’s podcasting training called Podcasters’ Paradise, through which you can learn how to create, grow and monetize your podcast from the best in the business.)

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO CREATE YOUR COURSES?

Our audience asked for them. Everything we’ve ever created in our business has been a direct result from audience feedback.

We engage with our audience regularly, and when we heard the same pain point or struggle over and over again, we invest the time to really research it, and then create the solution for it.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST BUSINESS GROWTH STRATEGY YOU’VE USED?

Investing in creating relationships. Having thousands of successful entrepreneurs on the podcast as guests has allowed John (and myself) to create incredible relationships with really amazing people. They’ve not only gone on to share the podcast with their audience, but those relationships have resulted in many partnerships, ideas, resources, and introductions that have massively impacted the growth of our business.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST MARKETING TIP?

Be consistent. Everyone can post on social media once per week, or run an ad every other month, or create one amazing piece of content. Very few people can do these things consistently. You don’t have to do EVERYTHING, but pick the one thing you want to go all-in on and do it consistently.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCTIVITY TIP?

FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Success. You will not make meaningful progress trying to work on 3 things at once. Choose your focus, and don’t let anything break your distraction during the focus time you’ve given yourself to move forward with that project.
