AN INTERVIEW WITH PINTEREST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT AND COURSE CREATOR MEGAN JOHNSON OF LOVEFAMILYHEALTH
STAY THE COURSE INTERVIEW SERIES
As entrepreneurs, we all have times when we fail and are ready to throw in the towel.
During those times, it might help to know that failing is often the key to success. Not being afraid to try new things despite the outcome, and trying again quickly if your attempts don’t work out, can be a determining factor for whether you reach success or not. Make it a goal to fail often, fail fast, and learn lessons along the way.
Hearing both the success and failure stories of others can be inspiring and encouraging. And gaining insight from the lessons learned by others in their business can be invaluable. That’s why I started the new Stay the Course interview series with course creators. This interview series showcases expert entrepreneurs and bloggers who have stayed the course and have reached success that matters to them, despite their failures.
This is exactly what my first guest Megan Johson of LoveFamilyHealth has done.
Course Creator, Pinterest Marketing Expert and Pinterest Virtual Assistant
Megan is a Pinterest virtual assistant, Pinterest marketing expert, as well as the course creator of the online courses Pinterest Ninja (about Pinterest marketing), VA Ninja (about how to become a Pinterest virtual assistant) and eBook Ninja (about creating and selling eBooks). You could say that through all her studying and experience Megan has mastered Pinterest…in just over a year of implementing her best Pinterest strategies she was able to increase her blog earnings from less than $100 per month to over $12,000 per month.
Not only has Megan succeeded in accomplishing this growth through Pinterest but she has also built a very successful Pinterest virtual assistant business from scratch, serving other businesses through her Pinterest expertise and services.
In the interview below you will find out Megan’s secrets to not giving up when times get tough and how she has managed to balance her other job, her business and her family while building and running a 6 figure Pinterest virtual assistant business.
I loved hearing Megan’s responses to my questions and I’m sure you will too! I hope that you are encouraged and inspired by her story.
INTERVIEW Q&A WITH MEGAN JOHNSON
PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK AS A PINTEREST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT
I’m Megan! I have done Pinterest marketing since late 2014! I started working on the side for small companies here and there, and now I have a full client list and three courses I sell!
WHAT MIGHT SOMEONE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
This isn’t my only job! I am also the Marketing Director of a Holistic Health Clinic here in La Jolla, CA!
PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AS A PINTEREST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT
I started my journey just before my daughter was born in 2014. I had always worked in Corporate America but stopped in 2011 after my Son was born. After taking three years off, I wanted to get back to work, but once I realized how much childcare cost, I decided I would stay home. Because let’s be real, it’s CRAZY how much it costs! I would be working to pay for someone else to watch my kids. And I wasn’t ok with that. I was fortunate enough that my husband’s job allowed me to say home.
However, I still wanted to work, so I started diving into all that was Pinterest marketing, as one of the companies that hired me to do their marketing wanted me look into Pinterest. So I did! I spent months taking courses and teaching myself all there was to know. After three months of working with them, I increased their sales from 3K a month to a consistent $10K+, all with the help of Pinterest!
After having so much success and spending a TON of money on courses that left out SO much, I figured I would create my own more in-depth course for people to take. And that is how Pinterest Ninja was born.
I have two other courses I sell as well, VA Ninja (how to become a Pinterest Virtual Assistant) and eBook Ninja, how to create, market, and sell a profitable eBook!
I have run into about 7 million roadblocks along the way. I have had a TON of people tell me no, a ton of people doubt me. I wanted to give up about 1,000 times and spent a lot of nights crying on my kitchen floor when I first started. IT. WAS. HARD, especially with such a saturated market.
But I keep pushing, I kept growing, I kept learning, and now I have a following of 150,000+ and two successful Facebook groups with nearly 6,000 members!
WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?
Success, to me, means setting a goal for yourself and reaching it, and then some. Money isn’t what makes you successful. It’s seeing my students start their own business and be successful at it! Or when they email me to tell me, they are now making money with their blog, and they never thought it was possible! That makes ME feel successful.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN YOUR BUSINESS AND HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE IT?
I think for me, it’s the fact that I started this from scratch, from nothing. And now, to see where it is today and how it just keeps growing is 100% my most significant accomplishment. I never in a million years would have ever imagined working for myself and running a successful company!
WHAT IS MOST CHALLENGING FOR YOU IN YOUR BUSINESS AS A PINTEREST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT? HOW DO YOU/DID YOU OVERCOME THIS?
The constant change. Pinterest is a constantly changing platform. Whether that be with their algorithm or their layout or the new features they continuously roll out! I am ALWAYS learning, always updating my courses, and it can be a lot!
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO KEEP GOING IN YOUR BUSINESS?
The people. As cheesy as that sounds, I LOVE seeing my students be successful. It’s the best feeling EVER!
LOOKING BACK, WHAT ARE SOME FAILURES YOU HAVE HAD THAT YOU FEEL HAVE LED YOU TO SUCCESS?
I think one of my biggest failures thus far is launching a course too fast and not taking the time to put a solid marketing plan in place. Shame on me, right? I SHOULD know better. But I think I got SO excited when I launched the first course that I did just that, I launched it without any planning. And the launch was OK. But it could have been better. Because of that, I have learned to slow down when I get too excited about something. This way I give myself time to make sure I am checking all the boxes before moving forward.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST HELPFUL THING YOU HAVE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY?
To ignore the haters! That sounds cheesy, too, right? But it’s SO true! People can be SO dang mean online! They can say some awful things, and it’s SO hard not to let that affect you. Or it is being told no. I was told no, so many times that I wanted to give up. I am SO glad I didn’t, and honestly, I am happy those people told me no! I feel like it simply pushed me even harder and helped me to dig deeper and create even better content.
IF YOU COULD GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING, WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?
I would automate my business much earlier than I have. By that I mean, other than my client work, my business basically runs itself! It’s pretty nice to wake up on a Saturday and see that you made money while you were sleeping!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE HAD IN YOUR BUSINESS? AND WHY?
Actually, something very recent! I had one of my VA Students email me about a month ago to tell me she is now bringing in enough money each month to help her and her husband afford to adopt! How cool is that? She said that it would have taken them a lot longer to be able to start the process if they didn’t have her extra income! That email made me cry. I think I re-read it about ten times. That makes it all the struggle 150% worth it.
HOW HAS STARTING YOUR OWN PINTEREST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT BUSINESS AND BEING YOUR OWN BOSS CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
My husband is a helicopter pilot in the Navy, so we move A LOT. Not ever having to look for another job ever again is pretty life-changing! Even though I do have another job here in California, I always have my business to fall back on.
WHAT IS THE MOST PROFITABLE ASPECT OF YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS? WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS AND HOW CAN OTHERS APPLY THIS TO WHAT THEY ARE DOING?
My courses for sure. They bring daily income in whether I am working or not. Can everyone sell a course? No, but everyone can sure has heck write an eBook OR start their own Virtual Assistant business. A lot of people say, well, why would I write an eBook if people can find the info for free online? Why? Because I sure as heck will pay you $20 to put everything in one spot for me, organized and easy to read. And so will a lot of other people! People like simplicity. They don’t want to search the internet for hours on end and read mixed reviews and advice.
WHO ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL FOR ALONG YOUR JOURNEY? AND WHY?
MY HUSBAND! Not only is he smoking hot, but he’s so supportive of me. He is my biggest cheerleader!
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORK DAY AS A PINTEREST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
Right now, it’s a little different than usual. I have about 12 clients, so a lot of times, I will get all my client work done on the weekend. It typically takes me about 6 hours. My husband will take my kids out of the house for a few hours, so I can get it all done. He’s the best right? This way, during the week, I am readily available for my kids and their school activities and after school sports! Otherwise when he is deployed and I am solo for 7+ months, I normally wake up about 2 hours before my kids each day to work.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT ON A SIMILAR PATH?
Take your time. Do as much research as you possibly can, and then some. I spent SO MUCH MONEY on courses that were AWFUL. Even though they came from well known experts! Do your research! And then do even more!
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED?
You know Rachel Hollis? Yeah, she is probably the best woman ever and I secretly wish we were best friends. Her book “Girl Wash Your Face,” hit home HARD for me. If you have read it, you know exactly why. If you haven’t get out there and read it!
WHY DO YOU THINK MOST PEOPLE FAIL TO GROW THEIR BUSINESSES? WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER THEM TO KEEP GOING, DESPITE THE SETBACKS?
They don’t have a drive or work ethic. So many people will buy a course or have an idea, but they don’t take the time to put in the actual work. There will ALWAYS be setbacks. Always. But if you keep going and keep trying, you WILL be able to do it. And STOP listening to people saying you can get rich overnight. That won’t happen. Ever. Or everyone would be doing it.
WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE COMING UP IN YOUR FIELD?
How are you going to approach these? Pinterest went “public” in 2019. This means you no longer are required to have a business account to advertise on the platform. Because of that, it’s now harder than ever to achieve that massive reach with your content. Using the proper SEO and using it the correct way, is now more critical than ever. Because of this, I am always updating my course. I am currently working on a whole new strategy section to add in early 2020. Once someone purchases any of my courses, they get any future updates for free! So they will continue to stay up to date on this constant changing platform!
