Do you love podcasts so much that you would like to help others with theirs and make great money at home doing it?
If so, keep reading to see how you can do just this by becoming a podcast virtual assistant.
Below you will find an interview with podcast assistant Marcie. Marcie is a student of the 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success course and the Podcast Production School course (both by Gina Horkey).
In this interview, you will learn a little bit more about her experience with these courses, particularly the Podcast Production School course.
The Podcast Production School teaches how to master the skills and strategies needed to launch, manage and grow podcasts for small businesses.
Before getting to the interview, let’s dive a little bit into what being a podcast virtual assistant actually entails with a few FAQs.
PODCAST PRODUCTION SCHOOL FAQS
WHAT IS A PODCAST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT?
A podcast virtual assistant is someone who offers technical, administrative or marketing support to podcast owners remotely.
HOW MUCH CAN A PODCAST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT GENERALLY MAKE?
It depends – factors include amount of experience, level of expertise, services offered, the level of client they’re looking to work with, etc.
Most Podcast VAs easily average $30 to $50 per hour (or more!) over time.
WHAT KINDS OF TASKS ARE PODCAST VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS IN CHARGE OF?
Podcast VAs can do a ton! From audio engineering to content repurposing and marketing to guest management, there are a lot of different services to offer in this space!
So you don’t have to master or offer it all – you can cherry-pick what services you enjoy doing and offer only those to your clients if you want.
Some of the top services that businesses hire podcast VAs for are:
- Technical setup
- Audio editing
- Episode distribution
- Show note creation
- Podcast project management
- Guest management
- Content repurposing
- Marketing and promotion
CAN PODCAST VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS WORK ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD?
Yes! All it really takes to do work as a Podcast VA is to have access to a computer, over-the-ear headphones and a reliable internet connection.
Podcast VAs can work with clients in their local community, home country or worldwide. We’ve entered into a global economy and the internet has made it possible for VAs and clients to work together regardless of their location!
ARE PEOPLE ACTUALLY HIRING PODCAST VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS?
You bet! There are already over 700,000 live podcasts to-date. Because of the many benefits businesses and brands get from podcasting, this number keeps rising!
Those folks already have shows and want someone else to manage things. But many more businesses and brands aren’t using audio but really want to be.
In either scenario a Podcast VA can help – they can step in and take over, improve a client’s existing show or help them to start from scratch.
I hope those FAQs answered some basic questions you may have about becoming a podcast virtual assistant. Let’s get into the interview!
PODCAST PRODUCTION SCHOOL REVIEW:
INTERVIEW WITH STUDENT MARCIE
Student of Podcast Production School
CAN YOU PLEASE START WITH TELLING MY AUDIENCE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
Hi, I’m Marcie Sextro. I own Platform Building for Creatives, whereas an author myself I understand the challenges of creating and building a social platform. I love helping others, so I started my business to help fellow creatives get the message out about their passion and creations.
I live in the heart of the Midwest, Nebraska, and I’m married to my hubby, Dean, for 34 years and have five children and three super smart and beautiful granddaughters.
I always have 3-4 things going on at once right now I am writing a historical fiction novel, running PB4C while owning Simply Lavender Farm with my hubby. We raise lavender and have an online store where we sell homemade natural soaps and bath products.
WHAT WAS YOUR LIFE LIKE BEFORE TAKING THE COURSE?
I have always been an eager learner. I love to take on challenges and learn new things, and as the empty nest was soon approaching, I was ready to take on all those things I had been putting on the back burner for so long.
I had a precise idea of what I wanted my life to look like now that I didn’t have so many responsibilities.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO SEEK TRAINING IN THIS FIELD?
Three things motivated me to seek a remote work job:
1. My youngest son was graduating from high school and heading to CA for Bible School. My oldest daughter and my granddaughters were moving to NC, so I was looking for a remote job so I could travel and work from anywhere.
2. I also wanted to work from home because I wanted to pursue writing full time. I wanted flexibility in my schedule to write when the inspiration hit me and work around those times.
3. I live in Northeast Nebraska, and although I had learned a lifetime of skills, there was no job opportunity to make the income I was qualified to receive.
I was nervous about doing a job online because I graduated high school before they started teaching computers. I had some computer knowledge, but I knew that would be the biggest obstacle I would have to overcome~my lack of technical expertise.
When I turned 40, I went back to school for Broadcasting and living in rural Nebraska; there were few opportunities to work in the field. I was a radio announcer at a small station but soon found out that the pay was minimal. So I jumped out of that field until I found the Podcast Production School Course. I was so excited; now, I could finally work in the broadcasting field.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PARTICULAR COURSE?
I chose 30 Days or Less to VA Success because I had researched for a year to find a legitimate work at home training and job placement course. The amount of recommendations Horkey HandBook had caught my eye, and I took the plunge and never looked back.
I chose the Podcast Production School because I was an Horkey HandBook alum and knew the teaching format and ongoing support that Gina gave were exemplary. I also want to learn from someone who has experience in the field, so that Hailey and Mel were part of this teaching team was super exciting!
WHAT WAS YOUR NUMBER ONE GOAL IN TAKING THIS COURSE? WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GET OUT OF IT?
30 Days or Less to VA Success
I wanted to attain the skills I needed to start and grow a successful online business that gave me flexible hours, a healthy income, and ongoing support.
I wanted to gain knowledge of the podcast world and the new editing software so that I could gain clients in my VA business in that field.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO COMPLETE THE PODCAST PRODUCTION SCHOOL COURSE?
WHAT WAS THE MOST VALUABLE THING YOU LEARNED IN THE COURSE?
My biggest takeaway was the numerous roles that are available in the podcast field. I thought it was pretty basic, producer, audio editor, and host, but there are so many other roles that are possibilities.
DID YOU MEET YOUR NUMBER ONE GOAL AS A RESULT OF TAKING THE PODCAST PRODUCTION SCHOOL COURSE?
Yes, I did. I am still in the process of gaining a client because I have some particular genres I am interested in working in, but I feel confident after the training that I can be a success.
DID YOU EXPERIENCE OTHER RESULTS THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR?
Yes, networking with other Podcast Production School students in the FB group has been super beneficial.
I also wanted to have a continued support system, and with the FB group, not only are the other Podcast VAs helpful, but the continued support and training available from the creators have been phenomenal. I love their positive outlook.
One of the first questions asked when we joined the FB group was, “How do you want us to celebrate with you when you gain your first client?” Now that’s a positive mindset!!
DID THIS COURSE MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS?
I knew it would be thorough since I had taken Horkey HandBook courses before, but this was beyond my expectations. That was mostly because of the external links to even more pertinent information from reliable sources and leaders in the industry.
DID THE PODCAST PRODUCTION SCHOOL COURSE HELP YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM YOU WERE EXPERIENCING?
I did not know a lot about the world of podcasting, and the information provided of its history and the ability for small business owners to connect with customers using it was enlightening.
DO YOU FEEL THAT PODCAST PRODUCTION SCHOOL COVERED EVERYTHING YOU NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT BEING A PODCAST VA?
I don’t think any course can cover every single topic because you will deal with the constant change in technology, different clients, and other issues that may arise. But I feel like because of the FB group that I have the support to delve into the podcast world because I have some fabulous backup from the creators if I need it.
WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT THE PODCAST PRODUCTION COURSE?
I liked the set-up of the course; the information and then practicing skills in each section helped to solidify the knowledge as I went along.
I like how genuine the creators were. I have a hard time learning from or asking questions to an instructor that comes across so professional that they aren’t approachable. I never felt that way with this group of instructors. They were honest about their struggles and made you feel like it was okay to ask questions.
Pricing has always been hard for me. I usually sell myself short, so to know what the going rates for the different roles in podcasting I feel like puts me ahead of the game.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WISH WAS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE PODCAST PRODUCTION COURSE?
I would have liked the technical training part of the course to also be available in PDF so that you could download it to have on hand as you were practicing. I took notes, but the download would have been nice to have.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO MAKE ENOUGH TO PAY FOR THE COST OF THE COURSE?
Don’t have a client yet.
WHAT DO YOU THINK COULD HELP STUDENTS MAKE THE MOST OUT OF THE PODCAST PRODUCTION SCHOOL COURSE?
Don’t assume that you have to be a technology guru to work in the world of podcasting. The number of roles available no matter what your skill strengths may be, the Podcast Production School shows what is possible in the world of podcasting.
DO YOU FIND IT EASY/HARD TO FIND CLIENTS?
I didn’t want to have to struggle to find clients; that is why I am in the HH FB group and the Podcast Production School FB group. When I want to add a client, I pitch the leads that come in that I’m interested in, and so far, I have the amount of work that I want.
WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT GOALS AS A BUSINESS OWNER? DO YOU FEEL THE KNOWLEDGE YOU GAINED FROM THE COURSE WILL HELP YOU ACHIEVE THESE GOALS?
I want to transition my VA business out of social media into podcast audio editing. I am confident that the knowledge/support I have gained from the course will help me achieve my goal.
DO YOU FEEL THAT BEING A PODCAST VA WOULD BE A GOOD WORK FROM HOME CAREER CHOICE FOR A STAY AT HOME MOM OR DAD?
I definitely recommend the Podcast Production School course, especially with the growth rate of podcasts coming out monthly and the shift in marketing that has taken place in the last few years of a more personal connection with your customers. I believe we are on the cusp of a new wave in marketing, and I want to be part of that. I believe there is a lot of room for growth for anyone who enters into this field.
WHO WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO?
Before I took the course, I thought it would be more geared towards those who were more technology savvy, but after taking it, I would recommend it to everyone. There is a role for anyone in podcasting!
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT THE PODCAST PRODUCTION SCHOOL COURSE?
The Podcast Production School course came out a few months ago, but already the course creators have added several additional resources and added value to the course. Since I have lifetime access to the course, it is an investment that continues to be an asset as the world of podcasting changes. I’m pumped about that!
